City of Cambridge Senior Counselors/ Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program (Temporary – 5 positions available) in Cambridge, Massachusetts

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program (MSYEP), operated by the Office of Workforce Development (OWD), is a public sector summer employment program serving approximately 950 Cambridge teens every year. Under the supervision of the Director of Youth Employment, the Senior Counselors will:

  • Provide peer mentorship and support to new Counselor staff
  • Chair Counselor committees to plan events and activities
  • Supervise 20-30 youth at worksites
  • Keep progress reports on each youth and worksite
  • Act as liaison between MSYEP youth and worksite
  • Help design and deliver weekly youth development workshops for teens
  • Maintain clear records of youth work hours; participate in payroll generation and distribution
  • Assist in conducting evaluation of program
  • other program related duties as needed

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

At least one year of experience working as a MSYEP Counselor required. Strong leadership skills, ability to work both independently and in a group, familiarity with issues affecting young people. Prior counseling and training experience preferred. Candidate for BA/BS in related field desirable. Background in Cambridge services and neighborhoods a plus. **

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sufficient mobility to travel back and forth from the MSYEP office to various sites throughout the city. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment with fluorescent light, air conditioning, computers and other standard office equipment. Shared office space can be busy and loud.**
