Lockheed Martin Research Scientist Senior / Electrochemist/ Cambridge, MA in Cambridge, Massachusetts
Lockheed Martin Energy Storage is commercializing a new flow battery technology for low-cost, grid-scale energy storage to support renewable energy integration and grid modernization. The flow battery is based on a novel battery chemistry comprising aqueous metal-ligand coordination compounds. We are seeking a Research Scientist to assist in the testing, development, and commercialization of novel flow battery materials and cell architectures to improve battery performance and durability. The successful candidate will bring deep technical understanding of electrochemical phenomena, materials science, and experience in developing battery and/or fuel cell technology. Experience in optimizing battery electrolytes and electrodes to improve durability and performance is highly desired. The individual must be flexible, able to adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment, and able to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in effectively directing junior team members is expected. A doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, or chemical engineering is required with industry experience (5+ years) preferred.

Our Lockheed Martin AES site is located somewhat close to the Alewife Station which is a major MBTA transit hub with access to the Red Line with service to Boston and bus lines with service to surrounding neighborhoods and adjacent communities. If you like living in right in the city, or out in the suburbs, or near the ocean, our location will offer ample choices for you. Where can you get to from Cambridge and Boston? Cape Cod is less than 90 minutes to the southeast. The White Mountains of New Hampshire are 2.5 hours to the north. Providence, RI is about 2 hours to the southwest. Montreal is about 5 hours to the northwest.
Basic Qualifications •Doctorate in the fields of inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, or chemical engineering. •Expertise in the fundamental electrochemical properties of battery and/or fuel cell technologies •Experience with experimental methods in developing battery or fuel cell technologies •Experience in effectively directing junior team members and communicating with management
Desired skills •Experience (5+ years) in industrial battery and/or fuel cell development •Deep knowledge of electrocatalysis, materials compatibility, and electrolyte design and formulation in battery and/or fuel cell technology •Knowledge and experience in membrane characterization and analysis •Experience in carrying out flow battery and/or fuel cell failure analysis
