What You'll Do Here:

As a member of the National Geographic Learning (NGL) English Language Teaching team,the Senior Development Editor manages in-house and out-of-house development of both print, non-print, and digital products to clarify, strengthen, and enhance their quality. This position uses management skills to successfully manage complex projects or a large slate of products to ensure timely delivery and cost effectiveness. Broadly stated, the position involves (1) maximizing the potential of the product in content, quality, and marketability, (2) managing assigned authors and other outside resources (3) project scheduling, content preparation, and quality assurance, and (4) product enhancement strategies.

  • Work closely with the Publisher, Executive Editor, Managing Editors, Production, Technology, and Manufacturing to manage all stages of the publishing process

  • Manage the development of programs for print and electronic delivery—including student books, all ancillaries, and tech products

  • Manage project team (if applicable)

  • Help conceptualize product content and write product development guidelines

  • Analyze content and provide direction to authors in terms of writing and organizational content

  • Write and rewrite content when necessary

  • Provide guidance to in-house editors

  • Hire and manage outside writers and development editors

  • Create and maintain schedules

  • Maintain budget

  • Problem-solve daily process issues

  • Ensure quality control

  • Bring projects to completion within specified deadlines and budgets

  • Communicate effectively across functional groups

  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet company goals

Skills You Will Need Here:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum 5 years of textbook publishing experience

  • Demonstrated success developing market-leading EFL/ESL products

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Must be innovative, highly motivated, and team-oriented

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks and meet established deadlines

  • EFL/ESL teaching experience preferred

  • MA TESOL preferred
