Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) believes there is a strong connection between a healthy environment and healthy people. As a company, we strive to find new ways to deliver business value, reduce our impact on the environment and combat the environmental contributors to illness and chronic disease. In support of its growing sustainability agenda, BCBSMA seeks a summer intern to play a key role in the company’s development and execution of its environmental sustainability efforts. The appropriate candidate will have a background or coursework in business and/or environmental policy and be knowledgeable of corporate sustainability practices and trends.

The intern should expect to gain valuable, real world private sector sustainability experience, while working closely with the Director and Manger of Environmental Sustainability. Core responsibilities would be research, benchmarking and evaluation of environmental, social and governance initiatives. Project focus areas would include: engaging office green teams in companywide campaigns, exploring opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of the company’s operations, collaborating on the company’s two organic corporate gardens, monthly blog / newsletter, corporate sustainability dashboard and creating new wellness opportunities for employees.

This internship is part of a company-wide summer internship program that includes a Day 1 orientation, lunch & learn sessions throughout the summer, a social outing and an off-site volunteer event. The sustainability intern is located in our 101 Huntington Ave., Boston office.

  • Currently working towards, or recent completion of, a degree in business, economics or environmental/health policy; Masters preferred but not required

  • Interest in sustainability, well-being, health care, particularly for vulnerable populations

  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments with varying deadlines and complete in a timely manner

  • Ability to carry out projects with a high degree of autonomy
