Director of Leadership Gifts, New York Metro Region
Leadership Giving at Boston University is comprised of a team of fourteen staff, based in Boston and covering domestic regions, responsible for raising capital gifts of six and seven figure gifts toward the Campaign for Boston University. This team collaborates closely with the school based teams, as well as with principal gifts, planned giving and alumni relations in order to fund programs, scholarships, professorships and more at the university.
The Director of Leadership Gifts, NY Metro region will report to the Assistant VP of Leadership Gifts and partner with the Associate Director of Leadership Gifts, Director of Principal Gifts and Deans of the Colleges and Schools of Boston University in planning and advancing a wide range of fund-raising activities, programs and priorities to meet fundraising goals for the NY Metro region. He/she will pursue leadership gifts for endowed chairs and scholarships ($100,000 to $1M plus) including identifying and cultivating prospects, developing solicitation strategies and coordinating the involvement of other fundraisers, administrators, faculty, alumni and volunteers. He/she will oversee various special projects in the region as assigned by the Assistant Vice President.
Direct solicitation of leadership gifts at the$100,000 plus level, involving all phases of fundraising engagement and significant travel to the NY Metro region. Targeted goal of 12-15 visits a month and annual Campaign dollar goal as determined by Assistant Vice President.
Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President, of Leadership Gifts, Associate Director and other appropriate central staff to create a core of university-wide prospects for leadership gifts in support of university-wide priorities. Monitor the progress of individual, and when appropriate, corporate and foundation prospects as they are moved from initial contact through solicitation. Includes the management of one or more direct reports.
Coordinate with the appropriate department heads in central development office to devise specific strategies and timetables for the successful solicitation of individuals, including the use of planned giving vehicles: gift annuities, trusts and bequests. Integrate Alumni Relations activities as an essential component of the overall development strategy, beginning with the enlistment of current students and including the identification and retrieval of lost or disaffected alumni.
Coordinate and orchestrate prospect strategies with the appropriate deans and school-based development officers and work in tandem to assure the highest and best use of time, budget and personnel.
Establish long-range goals and objectives for development programs and activities in the assigned region that reflect academic priorities for private support. Prepare regional operating plan designed to facilitate achievement of these goals and objectives as a component of the University-wide leadership gifts plan.
Establish and maintain an effective, high-level volunteer structure designed to provide counsel, to identify prospects, and to assist with specific solicitations and other programmatic initiatives as necessary
5-8 years of relevant or related experience is required. Proven ability to solicit and close six and seven figure gifts. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and demonstrated ability to build relationships in a highly collaborative environment is a must, as is the ability to "manage up" in working directly with managers; engaging laterally by building relationships of trust and mutual value added with colleagues across campus; and managing "down" to ensure the support and cooperation of staff both within and outside of Development.
