Ensures the accurate, timely completion of monthly, quarterly and annual book close cycles for a complex accounting function by effective planning, monitoring, and problem solving.
Oversees the production of all financial reports issued by a complex accounting function, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting regulations.
Guides the team in working with accounting policy on highly complex accounting issues and developing processes to address them, ensuring the issues are communicated appropriately to senior management.
Develops, documents, and assures adherence to an internal control framework that ensures accurate and timely financial reporting. Makes recommendations to continuously improve the overall control environment.
Effectively collaborates with accounting operations and data management as well as FP&A and Reporting.
Proactively identifies financial reporting risks and opportunities within the underlying business unit activities and translates that into decision-useful improvement recommendations.
Provides sound financial advice to business units or other departments, anticipating the financial statement impact of changes in the business environment and making recommendations to ensure appropriate and beneficial accounting treatment.
Understands how data flows through the financial systems to the accounting function, planning appropriately for changes and prioritizing and implementing enhancements.
Uses increasing insight to identify and implement improvements that increase the business value and efficiency of the work performed. Initiates and/or leads increasingly complex projects and continuous improvement activities that may span beyond the scope of own team's responsibilities.
Management of individual business unit controllers (e.g. Insurance, Asset management, etc…
Financial control reviews of business units
Review of business unit reporting analysis and metrics
Review and understanding of accounting operations and use of accounting data
Planning and coordinating capital and business transactions
Planning and coordination of new and changing accounting and financial reporting requirements
The business unit controller will be responsible for oversight over the financial reporting and controls residing within all business units. They will be responsible for the sign off on the financial reporting ensuring that all reporting is accurate and reliable.
Therefore, they must have broad financial acumen, familiarity with both insurance and asset management topics as well as a strong control orientation. They must be able to easily navigate between accounting and reporting topics, while seamlessly communicating those to business leaders and others within finance to provide efficient decision-useful information and analysis.
The business unit controller must be comfortable working within a highly collaborative broader functional team where not all accounting and reporting activities reside with their direct daily supervision and management.
Bachelor's degree (Accounting or Finance) is required.
CPA or advanced degree in Accounting preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of accounting or finance experience.
Must demonstrate the ability to execute thoroughly in a fast-paced work environment, adapting quickly to changing conditions to achieve results.
Must possess the ability to collaborate with peers across the organization to gain support for ideas and execute on projects that deliver value to customers.
Comfortable leading meetings, making strategic recommendations to senior management and giving presentations to increasingly large audiences.
Possesses an advanced understanding of accounting principles.
Some travel may be required.
