The Facility Services Department is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the MIT Lincoln Laboratory complex in support of the research mission. It also furnishes the design, engineering, and construction needs of the Laboratory, addressing its ever-changing program requirements. The department's overarching goal is to provide prompt, quality service in a wide spectrum of responsibilities in compliance with state and federal codes, and manage many services that impact the workplace quality of life for the Laboratory's population.

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for design of mechanical system upgrades including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection & process piping systems. Provide the ‘in house staff’ with engineering support on facility issues. This position is also responsible for the design of new, and modifications to the existing HVAC systems within the facility, office and Laboratories including equipment layout, ceiling plenum considerations, and hardware selection in a R&D environment. Provide project support associated with cost estimating.

Responsibilities Include: • Provides computer system design using AutoCAD – 2013. Create and input, by computer, facilities design layouts. • Check and approve submittals, shop drawings, and product submittals. • Generate preliminary and final cost estimates. Be prepared to discuss or negotiate costs with Project Managers. • Make design studies and write reports as may be required. • Inspect and analyze field conditions, make required calculations, and coordinate work among disciplines. • Attend job coordination meetings. Assist and advise project managers, field engineers, and contractors. • Write design criteria and outline specifications for projects that require outside consultant assistance. Review their drawings and specifications during and at completion of design. Conduct evaluations of finished work. • Be familiar with applicable building codes (IBC and Massachusetts) and design for conformance.

REQUIREMENTS: • The applicant should have at least three years' experience in design. Must have minimum of two years' experience in CAD design. Applicant should have experience in the design of buildings and other structures. An Associate’s degree in engineering is a plus.

• Experience using ‘AUTOCAD – MEP’ application software is required.

• Must be familiar with building systems to include Mechanical portions of projects, including all of the following systems; AHU’s, fan coils, exhaust systems, chillers, pumps, compressors, process piping, sprinklers, fire protection inclusive of equipment space layout, etc. • Applicant must be self-motivated and have the ability to work with others. Should have some experience in the installation of facilities associated with research laboratories, clean rooms, computer rooms and office buildings.

• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance required.
