The time is right to join HNTB! Our Boston office has an immediate opening for an experienced Structural Engineer who qualifies as a Tunnel Inspection Team Leader. The successful candidate for this position will be primarily responsible for leading the field inspection and completion of the inspection reports for tunnels located throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs, including oversight of entry-level staff engineers and attending client meetings.
Assists assigned department by performing engineering-related tasks including research, development, calculations, design and delivery on assigned project(s).
Contributes to the preparation or modification of reports, plans and designs for projects.
Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Review previous inspection reports and information.
Schedule and coordinate field operations with subcontractors and subconsultants.
Perform field inspection of complex structures including bridges and tunnels.
Lead team members in field and office tasks.
Identify critical findings during field inspection.
Document inspection findings including the use of digital photography.
Operate inspection equipment such as bucket trucks, manlift and underbridge inspection vehicles.
Climb ladders and perform other work in support of inspection activities.
Prepare cost and man-hour estimates.
Prepare inspection reports, evaluations and recommendations.
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering
2 years relevant experience
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from a 4-yr accredited college or university
Minimum of 2 years of overall experience with bridge/tunnel inspection
Passed National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Fundamentals of Engineering examination
NHI 1-week tunnel inspection training.
Strong technical writing skills.
Physically capable of performing continuous field work including, working at heights and in confined spaces, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
Valid Driver’s License.
4 years of overall experience
Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer
NHI 2-week bridge inspection training.
OSHA 10 HR Certification
Experience working with state (MassDOT & MBTA) and local transportation agencies
Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.), and experience with engineering computer applications such as AutoCAD.
General Work Conditions
Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
